Kimberly LaPanne

Meet Kimberly LaPanne of Wayland, MI. She was officially diagnosed with lupus 9 years ago after experiencing symptoms for several years prior to her diagnosis.

Kimberly’s Story:

I’ve had cutaneous lupus since I was a child and systemic lupus for 16 years (9 diagnosed). I was finally diagnosed after 7 years of working with my doctor trying to get a positive test for SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus). At first, I had a butterfly rash and chest rash with sun exposure, joint pain, fever, muscle pain and loss, hair loss, migraines, and was getting sick with upper respiratory infections monthly. I learned later when I got diagnosed with SLE that I also had CLE as a child. Doctors just never knew what it was, but treated it the same way lupus is treated, it just wasn't common to treat for lupus in children in that area back then. My son also has cutaneous lupus and because of my history and diagnosis, he was able to get his diagnosis and treatment plan in less than a year, and has been in remission for years.

After my diagnosis, I had to quit my job working with kids and with being immunosuppressed, dealing with the constant germs was just too much. I have many other overlapping issues. My biggest challenge is energy and making sure I don't over do things when I do have it.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is newly diagnosed?: Be your own advocate!

What is one misconception you wish you could change about lupus?: That the fad you read about is going to be a cure for me.

What brings you joy?: Volunteering and helping people.
