May is Lupus Awareness Month
May is a time for the lupus community across the country to join together to raise awareness of the physical, emotional and economic impact of lupus. Every May, Lupus Awareness Month shines a vital spotlight on a disease that is often invisible, misunderstood and underdiagnosed.
It is estimated over 14,000 Michiganders have been diagnosed with some form of lupus and as many as 1 million people nationwide, yet lupus is still widely misunderstood. Two-thirds of the U.S. population does not know what lupus is, making it the Michigan Lupus Foundation’s mission to increase awareness and educate the public about symptoms, impact and realities of living with the disease.
Lupus Awareness Month is an opportunity to:
Raise Public Awareness: Spread awareness, education and knowledge of this chronic, invisible illness.
Build Community and Support: If you are living with lupus, you are not alone. We want to help bring people together and create a sense of community.
Amplify Patient Voices: Patients are encouraged to share stories and advocate for themselves and others to have a powerful and lasting impact.
Promote Earlier Diagnosis: On average it can take 2-6 years to diagnose lupus, but awareness can lead to earlier detection. The more people who recognize the signs of lupus, the more likely they are to seek medical help earlier in their lupus journey.
Support Funding and Research: Increased awareness can lead to more support for research, funding for new treatments and better healthcare resources to improve the quality of life for those living with lupus.
Honor Warriors We’ve Lost: We want to remember those who have lost their battles with lupus far too soon. We will continue to fight for a cure.
This year, supporting Lupus Awareness Month is even more crucial as the Michigan Lupus Foundation continues to raise funds to ensure the future of the organization.
The Michigan Lupus Foundation exists to improve the quality of life for those living with lupus through support, education and research with the goal of finding a cure. We provide resources for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers including support groups, counseling, awareness events and financial aid programs due to the high medical cost of living with the disease. We also advocate with lawmakers to improve the patient experience with insurance, medications and disability rights. Donations made to the Michigan Lupus Foundation directly support services that are vital to the Michigan community. Lupus Awareness Month is an excellent opportunity to rally your friends and family to raise funds to support the fight against lupus.
